Science At Great Ape Trust
The scientific trajectory at Great Ape Trust – based on the 40-year research corpus of Dr. Duane Rumbaugh, Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and William M. Fields – seeks to understand the effects of rearing culture on bonobos' cognitive abilities. Bonobos living at Great Ape Trust have been reared in a bicultural Pan/Homo Environment with both bonobo (Pan paniscus) and human (Homo sapiens) influences.

History of Ape Language
Two methods have been used to teach human languages to great apes: one uses sign language; the other, pioneered by Dr. Duane Rumbaugh and Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and explored at Great Ape Trust, uses graphical symbols called lexigrams that represent words.
