Des Moines, Iowa – April 27, 2007 – Great Ape Trust of Iowa has announced its Web site has been recognized as an Official Honoree by The Webby Awards, the leading international honor for the Internet. This marks the second time in three years The Webby Awards has acknowledged www.GreatApeTrust.org for remarkable achievement as a science-based Web site. Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by The New York Times, The Webby Awards is judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences.
The 11th Annual Webby Awards received a record 8,000 entries from over 60 countries and all 50 states. Out of more than 8,000 entries submitted, fewer than 15% received this honor and were deemed Official Honorees. In addition to Great Ape Trust, Official Honorees in the Science category included Scientific American, American Museum of Natural History, BBC and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Official Honorees in other Web site categories included ABC News, CNN, AOL, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and MTV.
"It’s extremely gratifying to have our Web site recognized with so many notable organizations,” said Al Setka, Great Ape Trust communications director. "Since its inception, our Web site has been our most powerful and important communications tool.”
In the coming months, Setka said The Trust will expand the Web site’s scientific research and education sections, implement blogs from the orangutan and bonobo research teams, incorporate a series of Web cams, produce live Webcasts, enhance the ape video and photo sections and introduce an on-line gift store of Great Ape Trust merchandise.
The Web site is designed and programmed by the Great Ape Trust communications department and Trilix Marketing Group of Urbandale, Iowa.

When completed, Great Ape Trust will be the largest great ape facility in North America and one of the first worldwide to include all four types of great ape – bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans – for noninvasive interdisciplinary studies of their cognitive and communicative capabilities.
