Bestselling author Sara Gruen will launch her new book Ape House in Des Moines on September 7 at an event hosted by the Des Moines Public Library. Ape House was inspired by Great Ape Trust, a scientific research facility in southeast Des Moines that studies bonobo language, culture and intelligence.  In researching the novel, Gruen visited the bonobos at Great Ape Trust and met with Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and William M. Fields, director of scientific research.

Gruen's national book tour begins at Hoyt Sherman Place Theater in Des Moines. at 7 p.m. on September 7.  Doors open at 6 p.m and the event is free and open to the public.  Books will be available for sale and signing following the event.

Great Ape Trust is a scientific research facility in Des Moines, Iowa, dedicated to understanding the origins and future of culture, language, tools and intelligence, and to the preservation of endangered great apes in their natural habitats. Announced in 2002 and receiving its first ape residents in 2004, Great Ape Trust is home to a colony of seven bonobos involved in noninvasive interdisciplinary studies of their cognitive and communicative capabilities, and to six orangutans.
