Gorillas

Historically, gorillas (Gorilla spp.) have often been misrepresented and portrayed as vicious and violent. However, studies from the wild and captivity have documented that gorillas are typically shy and avoid confrontations when ever possible, unless they are provoked or threatened.

Taxonomy

Family: Family Hominidae
Species: Gorilla (Gorilla spp.)

There are two species of gorilla:

  • Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla)
  • Eastern Gorilla (Gorilla beringei)

There are four subspecies of gorilla:

  • Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
  • Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli)
  • Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)
  • Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri)
